The Streatfeild family is one of the most illustrious in the area and the one most often associated with the village of Chiddingstone. Their decendants still live in the village today. At different times in the past, Streatfeilds have owned almost every house of note in the parish - the most important of which is Chiddingstone Castle (formerly known as High Street House). The most significant boost to the family fortunes was when, in the eighth generation set out below, Henry Streatfeild married Anne Sidney in 1752. Anne was the daughter of Sir Jocelyn Sidney of nearby Penshurst Place. On Sir Jocelyn's death, Henry could potentially have inherited the Penshurst Estate, but after much legal wrangling Henry and Anne only received the income from the Sidneys' Welsh properties - but these were still fairly significant. By tradition, the first son in each generation was called Henry which can sometimes cause problems for local historians. The initials HS, in an intertwined device, standing for Henry Streatfeild are carved into the wooden fabric of many of the older houses in the area. The problem is always "which Henry ?".

"In the chancel of the church at Chiddingstone the is a very fine freestone altar tomb, faced and topped with black marble, and a long Latin inscription to her memory:-
...Viris duobus juncta, Thomae Streatfeild prius Deinde Johanni Seyliard, utrisq bonos Natalis sortitis et honestas familias Ambob' chara pariter et faecunda fuit ....
Facing the Nave are three achievements of arms: the first Streatfeild impaling Reeve; the second Seyliard impaling Reeve; the third Seyliard and 8 quarterings. The last letters on the monument are indistinct; but the arms are beautifully clear, having been repainted by the daughter of Harriet Streatfeild in 1814. The grandaughter of John and Francis Seyliard married Thomas Woodgate, her name was Susanna. He died young in 1706, and an inscribed stone near the altar rail marks the spot. "
