HIGH STREET HOUSE
High Street House was the original name of Chiddingstone Castle and as the name suggests was originally a house in the high street. The drawing on the map below shows high street house in 1720. The drawing from the border of another map dated 1702 at the top of the page shows a fine proportioned Carolinian mansion which was the result of the first rebuilding of the house by Henry Streatfeild in 1680. A map drawn in 1750 shows a remarkable transformation of the surrounding fields into a vast landscaped garden, with a 1 kilometer tree lined avenue in a straight line from the house down to the river Eden. There are also formal pleasure gardens, a walnut tree walk, a chestnut wilderness and a Great Orchard. None of this is visible today.
