THE ATTE WOOD HOUSE

The last house in Chiddingstone High Street is known as 'the Attewood house' after John atte Wood who lived there in 1453. We know that he farmed Catsfield (near the village cricket pitch) at that time and that he took part in Jack Cade's rebellion in 1450.
Although there are many deeds mentioning unspecified houses in the High Street the next unambiguous mention of this house is not until 1724 when there were two tenants - William Pope and Thomas Egleton.
The brick fronted house next door shares the same wood framed structure as the Attewood house implying that they were once a single property.
