NEW HOUSES IN CHIDDINGSTONE
There are five hamlets in the Parish of Chiddingstone that have been the focus of recent development - recent here meaning in the last 200 years. If you look at a map in 1750 it would not have been obvious that these places would have been the ones that would be chosen for development. The area around Bassetts Mill should have been a more likely place than Bough Beech for a hamlet to develop in an agrarian community. In the same vein, why did the triangular green at Chidingstone Hoath blossom but not the same sized green between Larkins and Vexour? These may be accidents of economic history. For Charcott and Chiddingstone Causeway the development vector was clearly the railway and the misleadingly named 'Penshurst station'. Wellers Town arose as a bold property speculation by the Weller brothers.
