HOATH HOUSE

Hoath House was previously known as BATTS or GREAT BATTS. It is first mentioned in 1420 belonging to the Ashdown family.It later passed to the Streatfeilds and contains some 17th Century panelling brought from Chiddingstone Castle when it was undergoing one of its remodelings.
A rental roll for the Manor of Chiddingstone Burgerst circa 1420 was transcribed by Dr.Gordon Ward (Notebooks 3) and states:
Rents pertaining to the manor of
Cedyngston Burgherssh (sic)
..........John Asshdowne for HOTHREDE and other lands parcell of the tenements of BATTES at terms XIIIId....
.......Richard Cole for OLDEREDE and land adjacent parcell of the tenement of BATTES at terms XVd.......
Wards notebook later has a transcription of a series of Stewards notes:
......19 Henry VII (1503) Richard Ashdowne held lands called BATTS and BILTONS, late Richard Bole,and upon alienation for a relief XIIIId but no heriot because he remained tenent.....
.......1634 Robert Ashdowne for part of his tenement called BATTS XIId
1601 - John ASHDOWNE to Agnes FRENCH who was marrying his son Robert, £16 out of Batts.
1724 - Owner: John ASHDOWNE. Tenant: Thomas TURNER
1840 - Henry STREATFEILD. Tenant: James LONGLEY
