THE CASTELLATION OF HIGH STREET HOUSE

The architects drawings for the castellation of High Street House still exist and are kept in the County Archive at Maidstone. The agrandisation of country houses by adding battlements and crenelations was very much in vogue in the 19 century.
The transformation into a 'castle' was done in two stages the first in 1809 and the second in the mid 1830's designed by Henry Kendall. It was funded by the proceeds of of the sale of the Streatfeild holdings in Coity in Wales that were aquired (after much legal wrangling) by Henry Streatfeild when he married Anne Sidney in 1752 ( the illegitimate daughter of Joceyln 7th Earl of Leicester.) Selling the Welsh land netted 13,000 pounds, which was used to 'Gothicise' High Street House into the present Castle.
